Here’s a few FAQs that are often asked, we hope they help you understand how Dr Lawless treats dry eyes.
1. How does the NuLids dry eye treatment work?
There are small glands (called meibomian glands) located at the base of the eyelids (right behind the eyelashes) that produce a clear oil.
This oil stabilizes the tear layer and slows down tear evaporation- keeping the eyes moist and comfortable. A common cause of dry irritated eyes is due to these glands becoming plugged and inflamed.
NuLids cleans and clears the gland openings, restoring their normal function.
2. How does heat therapy improve dry eyes?
Heat (from a warm compress or heated mask) helps to open the meibomian glands to improve oil gland function, increase oil flow into the eyes, stabilize the tear film, and slow down tear evaporation.
3. Why do contact lenses cause dry eyes?
Studies have shown a few reasons. These include;
- Decrease oxygen supply to the eye from the air
- Contact lens absorption of some of the available tear layer
- Splitting or thinning of the tear layer by the contact lens
These effects can be minimized by keeping the contact lenses clean, not overwearing them, and replacing them on the prescribed schedule.
Lubricating drops approved for contact lens wear are also helpful.
