Dr. Lawless had the pleasure of taking part in a mission trip to deliver eye care and eyeglasses to the people of Dominica in May 2024.
Our group of 32 included 6 optometrists, 15 students, 10 new Michigan College of Optometry grads, 2 opticians, and a great group of volunteers.
Over a 1 week period, we saw almost 1,500 patients and dispensed over 3,000 pairs of prescription eyeglasses, readers, and sunglasses.
He went as a member of the Michigan VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) team.
We also had great support from the Rotary Club of Dominica.
About Domenica
Dominica (doh-min-EEK-ah) is a small island just north of South America in the West Indies, bordered on the west by the Caribbean Sea, and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. It is a small, mountainous island comprised of rain forests and beautiful winding rivers.
The people of Dominica are primarily Christian, English speaking, and hard working. They are mostly farmers- with bananas being a major crop.
Many are fisherman, they are also a very poor people, and have very little access to eye care or eyeglasses.
So, here’s to the people of Dominica, who through their kindness and hospitality gave us as much, or more than we were able to give them.
